Malé mestečko Amity, ktorého hlavné príjmy plynú z letných mesiacov od turistov, sa pomaly spamätáva z finančnej katastrofy, spôsobenej pred štyrmi rokmi vyčíňaním krvilačného žraloka, ktorý začal loviť blízko miestnych pláží a zabil viacero ľudí. Zdá sa, že ľudia sa pomaly začínajú vracať a starosta Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) sa stretáva s podnikateľom Lenom Petersonom (Joseph Mascolo), ktorý chce investovať do realít. Práve v čase ich stretnutia sa dvaja potápači vyberú preskúmať oblasť, kde pred rokmi policajný náčelník Martin Brody (Roy Scheider) zabil obrovského žraloka. Nečakane sa objaví ďalší žralok a oboch potápačov zabije. Onedlho žralok zabije dievča na vodných lyžiach, zničí motorový čln a zabije aj jej matku. Brodymu je jasné, že k Amity dorazil ďalší obrovský žralok a chce nechať zavrieť pláže. Vaughn a Peterson však o tom nechcú ani počuť. Brody chce zavolať na pomoc priateľa Matta Hoopera, ten je však na výprave za polárnym kruhom a vráti sa až o niekoľko mesiacov. Brody sa však nevzdáva. Svojim synom Michaelovi (Mark Gruner) a Seanovi (Marc Gilpin) zakáže účasť na jachtárskych pretekoch, kde má byť aj starostov mladší syn. Všetci sa domnievajú, že Brodyho obavy sú spôsobené traumou spred rokov. Brody však nespúšťa oči z morskej hladiny a keď zbadá tmavý tieň pod hladinou, spôsobí poplach, ktorý vydesí turistov a rozzúri starostu, pretože sa ukáže, že išlo o planý poplach. Brodyho prepustia a keď sa vráti domov, zistí, že jeho synovia napriek zákazu vyrazili aj s priateľmi na more. Vyzbrojí sa, vyrazí za nimi a dúfa, že ich nájde skôr, než bude neskoro... (TV JOJ)
