Prvá expedícia na Mars riadená ľudskou posádkou je vyhladená neznámou formou života, ktorá sa následne usídli na záchrannej lodi... V roku 1973 vyšle ľudstvo na Mars prvú vesmírnu loď s ľudskou posádkou na palube. Spojenie s výpravou sa však preruší, a keď na miesto dorazí záchranný tím, nájde iba jediného živého človeka: veliteľa výpravy, plukovníka Edwarda Carruthersa (Marshall Thompson). Všetko nasvedčuje tomu, že plukovník zavraždil ostatných členov posádky. Carruthers však tvrdí niečo iné: podľa neho jeho kolegov zavraždila neznáma mimozemská bytosť počas piesočnej búrky. Záchranári mu neveria, čím ohrozia celé ľudstvo. "To" niečo totiž spolu s nimi ako čierny pasažier pocestuje na Zem... (Incantator)
