Skúseného vedca a vulkanológa Harryho Daltona (Pierce Brosnan) vyšlú, aby preskúmal nezvyčajnú aktivitu sopky. Rozhodol sa pre spoluprácu s očarujúcou Rachel Wandoovou (Linda Hamiltonová). Je mu jasné, že so sopkou nie je čosi v poriadku a snaží sa presvedčiť svojho šéfa, aby odsúhlasil evakuáciu Dantes Peak. Ale proti ľudskému životu stoja aj ekonomické záujmy. Prístroje nezaznamenávajú nič mimoriadne a nikto nechce riskovať veľké finančné straty. Bezmocnému Harrymu uverí len starostka mesta, ale napriek tomu nestihne podniknúť nevyhnutné kroky, potrebné pre záchranu ohrozeného obyvateľstva. Zemetrasenie spôsobí náhlu erupciu, sprevádzanú prúdmi nebezpečnej horúcej lávy a množstvom horúceho popolu. Obyvatelia Dantes Peak sa nachádzajú v smrteľnom nebezpečenstve. Harrymu a Rachel sa celkom náhodou podarí ukryť v podzemí. Príde však záchrana včas? Vyslobodí ich zo starého dolu, ktorý je teraz zatavený do lávového obalu skôr, ako sa im minú zásoby jedla a vzduchu? (TV Markíza)
