Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) je sedemnásťročný utiahnutý chlapec bez zdravého sebavedomia, ktorý si príliš nerozumie s rodičmi, súrodencami ani učiteľmi. Je zamilovaný do spolužiačky Jennifer, chce sa presadiť ako gitarista skupiny Pineheads a priatelí sa s excentrickým vedcom. Krásne strelený Dr. Emmett „Doc“ Brown (Christopher Lloyd) práve úspešne dokončil svoj najväčší vynález – stroj času, zabudovaný do športového voza DeLorean. Marty ešte netuší, že sa práve začína najúžasnejšie a najpoučnejšie dobrodružstvo jeho života. Doktor Brown mu ukáže, ako sa stroj ovláda. Sám sa chce preniesť o 25 rokov do budúcnosti. Než však stihne odcestovať, prepadnú ich líbyjskí teroristi, ktorým doktor ukradol plutónium, vzácne palivo do stroja času. Teroristi doktora zastrelia, ale Martymu sa podarí v stroji času uniknúť. Ocitne sa však o 35 rokov späť v minulosti, v roku 1955. Na cestu späť do súčasnosti už nemá dosť plutónia. Zájde teda do najbližšej kaviarne, aby zavolal doktorovi Brownovi. Tam náhodou narazí na svojho budúceho otca Georgea i matku Lorraine a prekazí ich stretnutie. Lorraine Bainesová (Lea Thompsonová) sa napokon zamiluje do Martyho namiesto do jeho budúceho otca Georgea McFlyea (Crispin Glover). Marty tak musí vyriešiť zásadný problém... (TV JOJ)
