Britské spracovanie príbehu talianskej rodiny Borgiovcov, známeho aj z neskorších seriálových verzií Borgia (od r. 2011) a The Borgias (od r. 2011).
Príbeh sa odohráva v renesančnom Taliansku 15. storočia a predstavuje osudy Rodriga Borgiu (Adolfo Celi), z ktorého sa stane pápež Alexander VI, a jeho rodiny: syna Cesareho (Oliver Cotton) and dcéry Lucrezie (Anne Louise Lambert).
Seriál, ktorý bol nakrúcaný v duchu svetoznámeho počinu Ja, Claudius (1976), sa pyšní prepracovanou kamerou a množstvom historických lokácií. Keďže bol nakrúcaný v rovnakom čase ako ďalší oceňovaný historický seriál Návrat na Brideshead (1981), kritici ho odmietli z dôvodu prílišného sústredenia sa na násilie a nahotu. Desať epizód seriálu sleduje dianie od roku 1492, kedy je Rodrigo zvolený za pápeža, a uzatvára sa v roku 1507 násilnou smrťou jeho syna Cesareho.
