Vynikající kriminální komedie rozehrává mistrovskou šachovou hru mezi šarmantním milionářem Thomasem Crownem (Steve McQueen) a mazanou vyšetřovatelkou pojišťovny Vicki Andersonovou (Faye Dunawayová). Znuděný Thomas se z životního rozmaru rozhodne, že uskuteční velkou bankovní loupež. Najme pět lupičů, kteří se vzájemně nikdy nepotkají, a zosnuje puntičkářský plán, jenž vyjde bez sebemenšího zádrhelu. Thomas zlodějíčky vyplatí, zbytek nehorázné sumy uloží na švýcarské konto, aby začal nový život, daleko od Bostonu a zdejší korporace. Zádrhel se však objeví v neméně půvabné a inteligentní Vicky, která je pojišťovnou vyloupené národní banky pověřena, aby celý případ prozkoumala. Teprve tím začne pro všechny zúčastněné to pravé dobrodružství, v němž nebude nouze o napětí, lásku …a falešnou hru. Kdo ale nakonec zakončí partii šach matem? Ačkoli slavná kriminální romance dosáhla na Cenu Akademie i Zlaté glóby za hudbu (Michel Legrand, Alan a Marilyn Bergmanovi), snímek proslul strhujícím způsobem vyprávění, na němž se výrazně podepsala jak rozvážná režie zkušeného Normana Jewisona (V žáru noci, Šumař na střeše, …a spravedlnost pro všechny, Jesus Christ Superstar), tak promyšlená prvotina právníka a scenáristy Alana Trustmana, jenž dále proslul scénářem k akčnímu thrilleru Bullittův případ (kde si taktéž zahrál Steve McQueen). Dynamiku příběhu posiluje na hollywoodský styl dobově netradiční práce se zmnoženým rozděleným obrazem, souběžně uvádějícím hned několik akcí současně (split screen). Tvůrci se inspirovali avantgardní montážní technikou Christophera Chapmana, která byla uvedena v Montrealu na mezinárodní výstavě Expo 67. A byl to právě Chapman, jenž ve spolupráci s pronikavou kamerou velikána Haskella Wexlera (Kdo se bojí Virginie Woolfové?, Rozhovor, Přelet nad kukaččím hnízdem) a hned trojicí pohotových střihačů (Hal Ashby, „Buzz“ Brandt a Ralph E. Winters) umocnil takřka jazzovou obrazovou jízdu, dodnes oslňující svou nápaditostí. (Česká televize)
