Celým jménem Dawn Roma French se narodila 11. října 1957 na ostrově Anglesey ve Walesu v Anglii. Její rodiče jsou Denys Vernon French, který byl členem Royal Air Force a matka se jmenuje Felicity "Roma" O'Brien. Má také o dva roky staršího bratra Garyho Frenche. V roce 1984 si vzala za manžela Lennyho Henryho, kterého potkala v komediálním klubu. Adoptovali si dceru Billie. V roce 2010 se spolu rozvedli. - Většina herců ve filmu nemluví svými rodilými přízvuky. Američani Annette Bening a Armie Hammer mluví ve filmu britským přízvukem, britští herci Sophie Okonedo, Letitia Wright, Jennifer Saunders a Dawn French mluví americkou angličtinou a další dva Britové, Rose Leslie a Kenneth Branagh, mluví s francouzským přízvukem. Ind Ali Fazal ve filmu mluví s britským přízvukem.
