Írsky farmár Joseph Donnelly (Tom Cruise) vezme po otcovej smrti spravodlivosť a svoj život do vlastných rúk a rozhodne sa hľadať šťastie v „novom svete“. Na ceste do Ameriky ho sprevádza svojrázna Shannon Christieová (Nicole Kidman), ktorej sa priečilo žiť ako bohatej anglickej dáme so stovkami príkazov, zákazov a obmedzení. V Amerike sa chcú ako stovky iných ľudí pokúsiť získať kus vlastnej pôdy. Ružové sny o zasľúbenej zemi sa však veľmi rýchlo roztrieštia o drsnú realitu. Musia žiť v krutých podmienkach a tvrdou si prácou si zarábať na živobytie i cestu do Oklahomy, kde ešte možno získať pôdu. Navyše Joseph musí často tolerovať povznesenú a nadutú povahu Shannon. Napriek tomu zažívajú krátke okamihy šťastia i prehier. I keď sa však jeden druhému páčia, stále nemôžu nájsť k sebe cestu... (TV Markíza)
