Osemnásťročná Alex Owensová (Jennifer Beals) žije v Pittsburghu a pracuje ako zváračka v miestnych oceliarňach. Po večeroch si finančne prilepšuje ako tanečnica v Mawbyho nočnom podniku a dúfa, že tento spôsob života nebude praktizovať naveky - jej najväčším snom je totiž štúdium klasického baletu!
