Los Angeles 1996 - policajt John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone), nazývaný Demolátor, v súboji s napoly geniálnym, napoly šialeným zločincom Simonom Phoenixom (Wesley Snipes) spôsobí nešťastnou náhodou smrť dvadsiatich rukojemníkov v troskách explodujúceho domu. Trest je vykonaný hibernáciou - zmrazením na desiatky rokov. Pre Phoenixa za jeho zločin, pre Spartana za neúmyselné zabitie... San Angeles 2032 - dokonalé mesto, plné harmónie, mieru a bezpečnej telepatickej lásky. Len kdesi v podzemí živorí skupina "zlých" ľudí, veriacich v slobodný život. Keď zločinec ako Phoenix počas konania o podmienečnom prepustení (čisto formálnom) ujde do tejto nenásilnej oázy mieru, polícii nezostáva nič iné, než priviesť k životu i Spartana, aby zachránil celé mesto.
