Americká jadrová ponorka Montana zaznamená v Kajmanskej oblasti neďaleko Kuby silný podmorský pohyb. Po strate energetických zdrojov sa potopí do hĺbky 200 stôp. Vojsko požiada o pomoc posádku podmorskej vrtnej veže Deepcore. Veliteľ veže Bud Brigman (Ed Harris) nie je nadšený, pretože záchranná operácia sa má realizovať pod vedením poručíka Coffeyho (Michael Biehn) a s účasťou Budovej manželky Lindsey (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantoniová). Na hladine je hurikán. Padajúci žeriav lanom stiahne aj vrtnú vežu na okraj podmorskej priepasti. V nej svetielkujú inteligentné mimozemské bytosti žijúce na dne oceána. Môžu sa prejaviť ako dlhý had vody, schopný nabrať podobu jednotlivých členov posádky, s ktorými sa pokúšajú komunikovať. Vojaci proti nim použijú jadrovú zbraň. Výskumníci chcú naopak znefunkčniť naprogramovanú jadrovú nálož, ktorá spadla až na dno podmorskej priepasti do hĺbky 17-tisíc stôp, kde človek nikdy ešte nebol. Bringman už nemá dosť špeciálnej dýchacej kvapaliny, aby sa z dna priepasti vrátil... Mierumilovní mimozemšťania z mamutej kozmickej lode mu zachránia život. (TV JOJ)
