Film EVA byl natočen podle románové předlohy plodného anglického spisovatele Jamese Hadleye Chase (1906-1985). Je příběhem chladné ženy, prostitutky, která miluje především peníze, méně již miluje muže, muži naopak milují ji a ona s nimi manipuluje. Takového osudu se dočkal především spisovatel Tyvian Jones, žijící v Itálii, který doplatil na Evin cynismus...
Režie filmu se ujal zneuznaný americký režisér Joseph Losey, který v té době již žil v Anglii. Přes slibnou literární předlohu a hvězdné herecké obsazení nesplnil Losey očekávání a Eva byla kritikou odsouzena jako druhořadý film. Losey byl naopak rozhořčen přístupem distribuční společnosti, která oproti původní verzi v délce 155 minut nasadila do kin film v podobě zkrácené o 40 minut. Pro vydání na DVD v roce 2002 byla použita verze ještě kratší v délce 103 minut; původní kompletní Loseyova práce se pravděpodobně nedochovala.
