Rosalie (Eleanor Powell) je na výměnném studijním pobytu na univerzitě Vassar a skrývá svou skutečnou identitu – je to evropská princezna z malého balkánského království Romanza. Když sleduje zápas amerického fotbalu, pozná Dicka Thorpeho (Nelson Eddy), který hraje za tým vojenských kadetů z West Pointu a oba se do sebe zamilují. Nezbytná protivenství nabídne Rosaliin návrat do Evropy, a to, že se zde má provdat za prince Paula (Tom Rutherford), který ale také miluje jinou. Dick přijede do Romanzy a teprve zde zjistí, kdo vlastně jeho milá ve skutečnosti je. Dick odjíždí a otázkou je, zda se ještě s Rosalií setká. Když ale v zemi propuknou nepokoje, musí monarcha i s rodinou prchnout, a to dává lásce obou protagonistů novou šanci.
Klasický dobový muzikálový/operetní příběh konce třicátých let natočil velezkušený van Dyke volně podle úspěšné hry z Broadway. Producent nechal napsat kompletně novou hudbu, místo původní od George Gershwina a Sigmunda Romberga zní Cole Porter. Výpravné scény s množstvím komparzistů, studentek, kadetů, vojáků z Romanzy, balkánských vesničanů (tedy jak si je americký divák představuje) i profesionálních tanečnic.
