Nová posila americké kanceláře v Itálii Maria (Maggie McNamara) rychle zjišťuje, že Řím není jen městem antických legend a zurčících fontán, ale také velké lásky. Její vyvolený, italský princ Dino di Cessi (Louis Jourdan), však nemá mezi ženami zrovna nejlepší pověst. Mariina kamarádka Frances (Dorothy McGuire) se proto rozhodne mladého seladona při cestě do Benátek trochu vyzkoušet. Sama přitom už po mnoho let trpí nenaplněnou láskou k postaršímu, ale velmi úspěšnému spisovateli, pro něhož v Římě pracuje jako sekretářka.
