Samotář Jeremiah Johnson opouští "bělošskou" civilizaci a jeho jediným přáním je žít naprosto nezávisle. Proto se vydává do divočiny, o jejíž čistotě nikdy nepochyboval. Nezkušený nováček však musí nalézt vztah k přírodě, k Indiánům i k sobě samému. První zima v opuštěných, krásných i drsných Skalistých horách ho málem zabije. Jeho odchod do lesů přitom nemusí nutně znamenat nalezení vlastního klidu... Děj baladicky laděného westernového příběhu se odehrává kolem roku 1844. Natočil jej významný režisér Sydney Pollack, jehož jméno zůstává spojeno s filmy Koně se také střílejí, Tři dny Kondora, Tootsie, Vzpomínky na Afriku či Firma. Jedním z charakteristických rysů jeho režie bylo umění vyprávět a zvolit výborné herecké obsazení, obojí nabízí i tento film. Hlavní roli nezapomenutelným způsobem ztvárnil Robert Redford, stejně v drsném příběhu zaujmou i působivé záběry nespoutané a ještě nezničené přírody, zachycené v divočině v Utahu.
