Snímek THE BROKEN CIRCLE BREAKDOWN vypráví milostný příběh Elise a Didiera. Ona vlastní tetovací salon, on hraje v kapele na bendžo. I přes velké vzájemné rozdíly je to láska na první pohled. On mluví, ona poslouchá. On je oddaný ateista a naivní romantik zároveň. Ona má na krku vytetovaný kříž, přestože stojí oběma nohama pevně na zemi. Po narození dcerky Maybelle je jejich štěstí naplněno. Maybelle bohužel v šesti letech vážně onemocní. Didier a Elise na to reagují velmi odlišně. Maybelle jim však nedává na vybranou.
