Ve dvacátých letech minulého století se mladý irský doktor Damien O'Donovan (Cillian Murphy) rozhodne opustit Irsko, aby mohl pracovat v nemocnici v Londýně. Po návštěvě farmy Peggy (Mary Riordan), se kterou se chce rozloučit, se však rozmyslí. Britské vojenské jednotky Black & Tans, které mají udržovat mír, vyhlásí zákaz shromažďování a všech kolektivních zábav a Peggyna vnuka Micheaila (Laurence Barry), který nerozumí anglicky, ubijí k smrti. Damien se, k radosti svého bratra Teddyho (Padraic Delaney), rozhodne přidat k formujícímu se republikánskému odporu proti britské kruté nadvládě a k boji za nezávislost Irska. Zezačátku operují v malých skupinách, kradou zbraně a občas "picnou" nějakého policajta. A pak je jednoho dne odhalí... (monolog)
