Hoteliér Brown (Richard Burton) se v USA neúspěšně pokoušel prodat svůj haitský hotel. V poslední době se mu do něj turisté příliš nehrnou, a to především kvůli totalitním režimu, který v zemi nastolil diktátor Duvalier se svojí tajnou policií Tontons Macoute. Kromě ekonomických problémů se situace na Haiti Browna zdánlivě netýká, je to totiž cynický samotář, který se zajímá především o atraktivní Marthu Pineda (Elizabeth Taylor), ženu jednoho jihoamerického velvyslance (Peter Ustinov)...
