Děj filmu se odehrává v 16. století v Benátkach, kde kurtizány měly zvláštní privilegia ve společnosti: nosily krásné šaty, studovaly hudbu a literaturu a byly společnicemi nejvýznamnějších mužů v republice. Když Veronika Francová dospěla v mimořádně přitažlivou ženu, zamilovala se do Marca Verniera, který pocházel z bohaté rodiny. Veronika si ho však nemůže vzít za manžela, protože pochází ze vznešeného rodu, ale její rodina je bez peněz. Matka své dospívající dceři brzy pomůže odhalit krutou pravdu: buď to vstoupí do kláštera nebo se stane kurtizánou. Její krása a inteligence často upoutá každého muže ve městě a Veronika se stane nejen nejznámější kurtizánou, ale i hrdinkou. Podaří se jí přesvědčit francouzského krále, aby pomohl Benátkám ve válce proti Turkům. Církev jí však brzy obviní z čarodějnictví. (oficiálny text distribútora)
