Psychologické drama udavače podle románu Liama O'Flahertyho. Americký film, vyznamenaný čtyřmi Oscary.  Významný americký režisér John Ford si velmi zakládal na svém irském původu, i když sám se už narodil v Americe (1. 2. 1894, Port Elizabeth, Maine). Držitel čtyř režisérských Oscarů se ve své tvorbě několikrát věnoval irské tematice. K jeho nejlepších dílům patří drama Denunciant (1935), v němž vylíčil příběh dobromyslného, ale přihlouplého Gypa Nolana (vynikající Victor McLaglen), který v době irského povstání v Dublinu roku 1922 prodá za 20 liber Britům svého kamaráda. Pocit viny pak marně utápí v alkoholu, ale své odplatě stejně neunikne. Snímek vznikl podle stejnojmenného románu irského spisovatele Liama O'Flahertyho (1925, česky 1928 jako Udavač) ve vysoce stylizovaných expresionistických kompozicích, vymykajících se zavedenému hollywoodskému stylu. Podobně depresivní příběh také nevznikal v Hollywoodu lehce. Jeho výroby se ujalo menší studio RKO s podmínkou, že bude vyroben s rozpočtem ne vyšším než 250 000 dolarů. Výsledkem ovšem je jeden z nejlepších snímků tehdejší doby, který byl také náležitě oceněn, mj. čtyřmi Oscary, za Fordovu režii (první z jeho čtyř sošek), za scenáristické zpracování Dudleyho Nicholse, za hudbu Maxe Steinera a za herecký výkon Victora McLaglena, který patřil k Fordovým kmenovým spolupracovníkům. I když film nebyl komerčně úspěšný při svém prvním uvedení do kin, v průběhu dalších let a zvláště po nástupu televize se dočkal i zaslouženého diváckého ohlasu. Literární předloha byla už předtím zfilmována v Anglii (1929; r. Arthur Robison, u nás uvedeno pod názvem Noc po zradě) a na konci 60. let byla natočena s dějem přeneseným do prostředí černošských radikálů jako Up Tight (1968, Napětí; režie Jules Dassin).
