André Moreau (Stewart Granger) cestuje se svým přítelem z dětství Philippem de Valmorian (Richard Anderson) na sídlo Gavrilaců. Philippe je velký snílek, obdivuje Voltaira a staví své přesvědčení na odiv. Rozšiřuje také letáky proti vládě a monarchii, kterou představuje nenáviděný král a jeho žena Marie Antoinetta. Po cestě se oba mladí muži zastaví v hospodě, kde se setkávají s markýzem de Maine (Mel Ferrer). Ten, když zjistí, že autorem buřičských letáků proti jeho milované královně Marii Antoinette je de Valmorian, vyzve Philippa na souboj a protože je výborný šermíř, během chvilky vítězí. Philippe de Valmorian umírá. André Moreau přísahá pomstu. Vyhledá nejlepšího učitele šermu, ukryje se před vojáky markýze de Maine u potulné herecké společnosti, kde vystupuje v masce Scaramouche. Učí se šermovat, až konečně nastane čas odplaty… (marťan)
