V časech, kdy se odehrává tento western, byly zákon, morálka a pořádek zpovykanými evropským výmysly, které do prérie Divokého západu ještě nezavály – zde, ve městečku Vinegaroon, panoval pouze jeden zákon: oko za oko, zub za zub. Alespoň do doby, než přivandroval do hnízda chřestýšů psanec Roy Bean (Paul Newman). Ten se prohlásí za samozvaného soudce všeho na západ od řeky Pecos, kde civilizace byla dosud sprostým slovem. Royova svrchovaná nadvláda přináší své plody, ale všechno jednou končí, a ne vždy dobře… nebo snad ano? Klasický western natočil velikán žánrového amerického filmu John Huston (Maltézský sokol, Asfaltová džungle, Bílá velryba, Mustangové, Za vodou a další), který spojil síly se zářící hvězdou Paulem Newmanem (Butch Cassidy a Sundance Kid, Harper, Hazardní hráč). Naturalistická a současně nadsazená stylizace snímku se opřela o vyvážený scénář Johna Miliuse, který podobné variace propracovával v takových hitech, jako Drsný Harry, Jeremiah Johnson či Apokalypsa. Výsledkem je nezapomenutelná westernová jízda, drsná i vtipná, a v mnoha ohledech nápaditá, která diváka nenechá chladným. (Česká televize)
