Paul Henreid, vlastným menom Paul George Julius von Hernreid, sa narodil 10. januára 1908 v Terste, v rodine viedenského bankára, baróna Carla Alphonsa von Hernreida a jeho manželky Marie Luisy. Vyrastal vo Viedni, kde v roku 1927 ukončil štúdium na Akadémii Márie Terézie. Chcel sa stať hercom, ale na naliehanie rodiny začal pracovať ako prekladateľ a knižný grafik vo vydavateľstve a štúdiu herectva sa venoval po nociach.
