Hlavním hrdinou je doktor David Banner (Bill Bixby), který se při laboratorním experimentu nešťastně předávkuje radioaktivními gama paprsky. Od té doby na sobě pozoruje neuvěřitelné změny - kdykoliv je ve stresu, změní se v zelené monstrum s nadlidskými silami, Hulka (Lou Ferrigno). Po každé přeměně si doktor Banner vůbec nevzpomíná, co v těle monstra prováděl. Jeho laboratoř exploduje a on je prohlášen za mrtvého.
Na rozdíl od jiných komiksových hrdinů s nadpřirozenými schopnostmi, zde je postava doktora Bannera ve zvláštní situaci. Své schopnosti má doktor Banner nedobrovolně, cestuje po Spojených státech a zoufale pátrá, jak se tohoto prokletí zbavit. Na své cestě je navíc vytrvale pronásledován bulvárním reportérem Jackem McGee, který tuší nějakou senzaci. Banner navštěvuje přátele a přijímá různá zaměstnání. Na svých toulkách potkává mnoho lidí a přes své schopnosti jim pomáhá z nesnází.
