Phineas Taylor Barnum (Hugh Jackman) je vizionár, ktorého úprimné nadšenie je nákazlivé a to aj v časoch, kedy jeho nezlomný optimizmus a energia sú jediným bohatstvom, ktoré má práve k dispozícii. Barnum začína svoju životnú cestu vedúcu až k hviezdnemu úspechu s prázdnou peňaženkou, zato však s hlavou plnou fantastických nápadov. Vďaka nim vytvorí a postupne zostaví fascinujúcu show zaplnenú úžasnými žonglérmi, tanečníkmi, akrobatmi, fúzatými speváčkami, najsilnejšími, najmenšími aj najvyššími mužmi. Z jeho predstavenia sa napriek mnohým predsudkom stáva celosvetová senzácia. A Barnum dokáže úspech svojej show náležite podporiť pomocou dovtedy nevídanej reklamnej kampane, ktorá mu vyslúži označenie “princ humbuku” a jeho meno sa stáva synonymom pre poriadne nafúknutú propagáciu.
